NEWSLETTER - SPRING & SUMMER 2010
March has started with at least a couple of days of bright weather to encourage the daffodils around Port Eynon! We can only hope that the spring and summer activities listed in the diary sheet (see below) will be blessed with warmth and sunshine for everyone to enjoy - and we are ready to move indoors if not! As always, please read the posters that go up around the villages, to check details given here.

Citizens of the Year. Mrs Pat Evans and Mrs Margaret Shaw, for their service to the community.
We welcome two new villagers - both of whom arrived in February 2010 - Jayden, born to Ryan and Bee Newlands, and James, born to Rupert & Helen Mathias.

Port Eynon Village Hall 200 Club. We are now coming to the end of the second year of our 200 Club. At the end of March we will draw the final winning numbers for this year, including the £100 prize. The Hall Management Committee thank all the members, who should, within  the few weeks, receive a report of the draws made during 2009/10 and an invitation to renew their membership for another year.

'Painted in Gower'. Port Eynon Art Group is mounting an Easter exhibition and sale of paintings in The Avalon Suite at the King Arthur Hotel in Reynoldston, on the 5th, 6th and 7th of April. Admission is free and 10% of the sales will be donated to Kim O'Driscoll's charity. In August, the group's annual exhibition and sale takes place as usual in the Village Hall, on the 6th, 7th and 8th of August. The group is also producing a 2011 Calendar featuring their work, which will be sold in aid of the Village Hall funds.

Craft Markets have become a regular part of our summer activities over recent years; three will be held in the Port Eynon Village Hall in 20o10, on May 2nd, August 12th and August 19th. Admission is free and any donations go to The Parkinson's Disease Society and the Sensory Garden Appeal of the Awel-y-Mor Care Centre, Swansea. A wide variety of work is offered for sale, including jewellery, Gower photos, cards, needlework and cakes.

St. Cattwg's. Over the past year, the church has received many visitors to a Flower Festival in August, an Open Weekend in September, and an exhibition of old postcards and local scenes. There was a full house for the annual Carol Service. St. Cattwg's of course welcomes all comers to its services and for the rites of baptism, marriage, and death. In spring and summer the doors are unlocked during daylight hours. Coffee is served after Morning Worship on the fourth Sunday of each month. A recent highlight of our church life sas the dedication by the Archdeacon of Gower of the magnificent carved cross created by Peter Nicholas. Another joyful occasion wsas the combined Harvest Festival and celebration of the service given to the church over many  years by Betty Gill and Joan Jones.
Everyone in the area will recently have received an appeal from the church, asking for contributions towards the construction of a small kitchen and a toilet for the disabled, as well as meeting costs of repair and maintenance. A good start has been made, with encouraging responses from a number of sources. If you have  not yet contributed please consider doing so. You can also help St. Cattwg's, St. Mary's and St. David's b y supporting the activities of the Ladies' Working Party, who are holding Mini-Markets in the Village  Hall on May 31st and August 9th.
There are still some redundant pews for sale at £225 each. The proceeds will be put towards the cost of new folding chairs. If you are interested in buying one or more, click here for details and a photograph.
ChurchPlease contact either David Attwell, Hugh Dunthorne or Richard Morris if interested.

Pitton Chapel also has two pews for sale. Made of solid pine and 10foot in length, they are on offer at £250 each. If you are interested in buying one or both, please contact Carolyn Jenkins of 390379 or Peter Scott on 391385.

Community Council News. The Community Council has met regularly during the past year, at Port Eynon Village Hall in the winter, andb at Llanddewi Hall in the summer. Significant topics have included:
Sand loss from Beaches. In January 2009 the Council received a presentation from Mr Alun Cairns, Welsh Assembly Government Minister, on the current status of licenses issued for sand dredging in  the Bristol Channel. The meeting was attended by representatives of the other Gower Community Councils, the Gower Society, and other interested bodies. The Council was very interested in the arrangements that would be out in place by the dredging company for monitoring any depletion of sand from the South Gower foreshore. Mr Cairns offered to obtain details and keep the Council informed of developments.
Knelston Providence Chapel. Following the closure and sale of the chapel in 2007, the Council learned of the opportunity to acquire the attached burial ground for the benefit of the community. At an open meeting in April, it was agreed to purchase the burial gtround and establish a trust for its management and eventual conversion to a garden of remembrance. Completion of the sale and purchase is expected soon.
Footpaths. In July the Council had a productive meeting with the officer of the City and County of Swansea responsible for the maintenance of footpaths, to review most of the local footpaths and to resolve any kn own maintenance issues.
Planning. The Council reviews all planning and licensing applications within its area and makes recommendations to the City and County of Swansea. However, the Council notes with regret that its observations and recommendations, although communicated to the Area Planning Committee, are often not adopted.
Your current Councillors are: Steve Heard, Rob Fisher, Malcolm Isaac (Scurlage)
Lynda Newland, Tim Wales, Andrew Oliver (Port Eynon)
Gareth Evans (Overton and Port Eynon)
                                                 Tom Roderick (Scurlage and Knelston)

The Council meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm and members of the public are always welcome. If you are interested in joining the Council, please ring the Clerk,  Barry Stubbings, on 01792 390035.
